My first taste of Middle Eastern Dessert was an excessively sweet baklava, but after moving to Detroit, MI (also while visiting Dubai) and tasting one, it was quite a revelation. Not overly sweet but just perfect that makes you dig in for few more bites. Since than I have learned so much more about these desserts, from Basbousa to Maamoul. Floral flavors from orange blossom and rose water elevates the syrup called ater/ sharabat; takes a mundane sweetness to something that tantalizes your palate. If you are still not sure why you need these desserts in your life make one and decide for yourself. Following recipes are traditional or one inspired from Middle Eastern desserts or flavors. A fair warning; you might just end up having an affair with them!
