Chinese Five Spice Beef Noodle Soup Coming Right Up!

I know I’m in the minority here, but the blistering cold of a New York City winter doesn’t phase me. I LOVE the cold. I love the layers of clothing, I love the holidays which to be frank must have been invented to bring cheer to one of the most gloomy seasons of the year (IMHO).

But the food! Oh, the food. From stews, to pasta to casseroles and roasts—winter is the time to indulge and get cozy in the kitchen! Should you eat that perfectly swirled pasta? Yes. Should you gnaw on the bone of a roast? Yes. Should you slurp on that noodle soup? Absolutely! Which brings me to this week’s Community Recipe, @elfoodielife’s Chinese Five Spice Beef Noodle Soup! The moment I looked at the ingredients and recipe, I knew I had to share this with you.

Never tried hoisin? Give it a taste because I know you’re going to love its sweet punch of umami. Curious about five-spice? It’s the warm Chinese spice mix you need in your pantry! Most grocery stores carry both these days and if not, you can find them easily online. Now go forth and slurp up a bowl of this heavenly soup and you’ll slowly learn to enjoy the cold season as much as I do!

Chinese Five Spice Beef Noodle Soup by @elfoodielife

2 tablespoons peanut oil
1 pound stewing beef, trimmed and cut into 2 inch pieces
2 tablespoons ginger, grated
2 cloves garlic, crushed
6 cherry tomatoes, chopped
4 green onion, sliced into 1/2 inch pieces on the diagonal
2 cups beef stock
2 tablespoons palm sugar (or brown sugar)
1/2 cup light soy sauce
2 tablespoons Hoisin sauce
1/2 cup rice wine vinegar
1 tablespoon red chili flakes
2 carrots, peeled and grated
1/2 red cabbage, thinly sliced
1 yellow pepper, chopped
2 ounces dried medium egg noodles

For the Spice Bag
2 star anise pods
1 tablespoon Sichuan peppercorns
1 teaspoon cumin seeds
1 teaspoon fennel seeds
1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon Chinese five spice
1/4 teaspoon coriander seeds
