ingredients
Tofu:
- 1 block extra firm tofu, pressed and sliced into thick “steaks”
- Cornstarch, for coating
- Neutral oil (such as avocado or canola), for frying
ingredients
Sauce:
- 2 teaspoons sesame oil
- 2 teaspoons cornstarch
- 2 large garlic cloves, minced
- 1 tablespoon fresh ginger, minced
- 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
- 1/4 cup maple syrup
- 3 tablespoons soy sauce
- 1 tablespoon water
ingredients
Stir Fry and Garnish:
- 1 bunch green onions, chopped
- 3 - 4 dried red chilies
- Toasted sesame seeds, for garnish
Method
Step 1
Slice the tofu into thick "steaks" (about 4–6 pieces). Pat dry and coat all sides lightly in cornstarch.
Step 2
Heat oil in a nonstick or cast iron skillet over medium-high heat. Pan-fry tofu steaks for about 3–4 minutes per side, or until golden and crispy. Remove from pan and set aside.
Step 3
In the same pan, add a touch more oil if needed. Toss in green onions and dried red chilies, and sauté for 1–2 minutes until fragrant.
Step 4
In a small bowl, whisk together sesame oil, cornstarch, garlic, ginger, rice vinegar, maple syrup, soy sauce, and water.
Step 5
Add tofu back to the pan. Pour in the sauce and toss to coat. Let it cook for 2–3 minutes, stirring gently, until the sauce thickens and clings to the tofu.
Step 6
Remove from heat. Garnish with toasted sesame seeds and serve hot.
