ingredients
For the tofu marinade:
- 300 grams firm tofu, pressed and cut into cubes
- 1 teaspoon kosher salt
- 1 tablespoon garlic powder (or garlic paste)
ingredients
For the flour mix:
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup cornstarch
- 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
- 2 teaspoon chili powder
- 1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
- 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
- 1 tablespoon garlic powder
- 1/2 teaspoon onion granules
ingredients
For the wet batter:
- 125 ml water
- Half of the flour mix (from above)
ingredients
For frying:
- Vegetable or sunflower oil, as needed
ingredients
For the sauce:
- 3 tablespoons vegan butter
- 5 to 6 garlic cloves, minced
- 1/4 cup soy sauce
- 2 tablespoons maple syrup (or agave syrup)
- 2 tablespoons sriracha (optional)
Method
Step 1
Press and cube the tofu, then marinate with salt and garlic powder for 15 minutes to allow the flavors to absorb.
Step 2
In a bowl, combine all dry ingredients for the flour mix. Split it in half. Mix one half with 125ml water to create the wet batter.
Step 3
Dip each tofu cube into the wet batter, then coat in the dry flour mix to ensure an even coating.
Step 4
Heat oil in a frying pan over medium heat. Fry the tofu for 3-5 minutes per side or until golden and crispy. Drain on paper towels to remove excess oil.
Step 5
In a separate pan, melt vegan butter and sauté the minced garlic until fragrant. Add the soy sauce and maple syrup (or agave syrup) and simmer for 2-3 minutes. If you like a bit of spice, stir in sriracha.
Step 6
Toss the crispy tofu bites in the sauce or drizzle it on top. Serve with your favorite grain or enjoy as a snack.
