ingredients
- 1 ¼-ounce envelope active dry yeast
- 1 1/4 cups warm water
- 1/2 cup Filippo Berio Extra Virgin Olive Oil, plus more for bowl
- 1 1/2 teaspoons kosher salt
- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 1/2 teaspoons Watkins Organic Black Pepper
- 1 teaspoon Watkins Organic Italian Seasoning
- 2 teaspoons anise seeds
- 1 egg yolk mixed with 1 tablespoon water
Method
Step 1
Sprinkle yeast over ¼ cup warm water and let sit until foamy, about 5-10 minutes.
Step 2
Mix the remaining 1 cup warm water with olive oil.
Step 3
Combine salt, flour, black pepper, Italian seasoning, and anise seeds in a large bowl.
Step 4
Stir in yeast mixture and add water and oil mixture to form a soft dough (add more flour 1 tablespoon at a time if needed) and knead in bowl for 5-10 minutes, until dough is smooth and elastic.
Step 5
Transfer dough to a lightly oiled bowl, turning to coat the surface. Cover and let rise until doubled in volume; about 30 minutes.
Step 6
Pre-heat oven to 400F degrees.
Step 7
Punch down the dough, then roll and stretch into thin ropes, about ½ inch thick and 6 inches long.
Step 8
Place on parchment lined baking sheets, brush with the egg wash and let stand uncovered for 20 minutes.
Step 9
Bake for 20 minutes. Allow to cool completely before serving.
