ingredients
- 1 package phyllo dough
- 2 cups water
- 1 tablespoon honey
- 2 1/2 cups sugar
- 1/4 cups walnuts, chopped
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter
Method
Step 1
Start with making the syrup. In a small pan add 2 cups of water, 2 cups of sugar, and 1 Tablespoon of honey. On medium/low heat and stirring occasionally, boil for 20 minutes. Take off heat. Syrup needs to completely cool down before pouring on the baklava.
Step 2
Preheat the oven to 300F.
Step 3
Melt ½ cup of unsalted butter on the stove or microwave, set aside.
Step 4
Grind 2 cups of walnuts. Add together with a 1/2 cup sugar and 1/4 teaspoon of vanilla.
Step 5
On a baking pan lay out 8 layers of phyllo dough. Brush each layer with melted unsalted butter.
Step 6
Spread half of the walnut mixture.
Step 7
Add 8 more layers, brushing with butter between each layer.
Step 8
Spread the rest of the walnut mix and add the rest of the layers, again brushing with butter.
Step 9
Cut into diamond shapes.
Step 10
Put into the oven for 1 hour 25 minutes, or until tops are golden brown.
Step 11
Remove from oven and immediately spoon the cooled syrup evenly over the hot baklava. This will ensure that it stays crisp. Let the baklava cool completely, uncovered, and at room temperature.
