ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 pound ground Italian sausage
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 1 red bell pepper, chopped
  • 1 yellow bell pepper, chopped
  • 1 orange bell pepper, chopped
  • 3 cloves of garlic, minced
  • 1 (14.5 ounce) can Tuttorosso Southern Vineyard Petite Diced Tomatoes
  • kosher salt, to taste
  • black pepper, to taste
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 cup mozzarella cheese, shredded
  • 1 store bought pie crust
  • 1 egg yolk mixed with 1 teaspoon water

Method

  • Step 1

    Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

  • Step 2

Heat oil in a large oven proof skillet over medium heat. Add the Italian sausage and cook until golden brown. Remove sausage from the pan with a slotted spoon and drain on a paper towel-lined plate to blot away excess oil.

  • Step 3

Add onion, bell peppers, and garlic to the pan and sauté, stirring occasionally, until soft and translucent, about 10 minutes. Add Tuttorosso Southern Vineyard Petite Diced Tomatoes , dried oregano, and salt and black pepper to taste. Return the cooked sausage to the pan and add 1/2 cup water. Simmer for about 20 minutes, then stir in mozzarella cheese.

  • Step 4

Cover the mixture with prepared pie crust, then brush with an even coating of egg wash. Make a large slit in the center of pie crust to allow steam to escape. Bake for 40-45 minutes, until crust is nicely golden brown. Allow to cool for 10 minutes before serving.
