Vietnamese Cinnamon is *real* cinnamon. That’s right, oftentimes, when you pick up an average bottle of cinnamon at the store, it’s actually Cassia, which pales in comparison when it comes to the flavor of true cinnamon. This Single Origin by Simply Organic Vietnamese Cinnamon has a strong, sweet, and rich flavor that works well in everything from cocktails to savory applications to ooey-gooey cinnamon rolls. Plus, Vietnamese cinnamon stands up well to applications of high heat, so we knew it would work well in a steaming pot of French press coffee! To make this fancy coffee drink at home inspired by traditional Vietnamese coffee, we brewed dark roast coffee with a sprinkle of Vietnamese cinnamon and a pinch of sea salt to enhance the nuanced flavors of the coffee and cinnamon. Once cool we mixed the cinnamon-scented coffee with a touch of sweetened condensed milk and served it over ice with a dollop of cold foam. The resulting iced bevvie is just what we crave on a hot summer morning!

*If using an electric frother, be sure to use the cold foam setting.  If you do not have a handheld or electric frother, you can add the milk to a small jar with a tight fitting lid and shake vigorously with an ice cube for about 2 minutes, or until foamy.

ingredients

  • 1 cup (60 grams) coarsely ground coffee
  • 1 teaspoon Single Origin by Simply Organic Vietnamese Cinnamon, plus more for serving
  • pinch of sea salt
  • 1/4 cup sweetened condensed milk, coconut or dairy
  • 1/2 cup cold whole milk

Method

  • Step 1

Add coffee, cinnamon, and salt to an 8 cup French press. Stir to combine.

  • Step 2

Bring about 3 ½ cups of water to a rolling boil. Pour 1 cup of boiling water over the coffee and let sit for 1 minute. Add the remaining water, then stir, ensuring all of the coffee grounds are moistened. Cover and let steep for about 4 minutes. After 4 minutes, press the coffee, then pour into a large glass to cool to room temperature.

  • Step 3

Once cool, add sweetened condensed milk and stir to combine. Divide the coffee among four glasses of ice. Foam the whole milk with a handheld or electric frother*. Top each glass with some cold foam, then sprinkle with more cinnamon and serve.
