"Onigiri are Japanese rice balls and are a super popular snack food staple in Japan. White rice is formed into a triangle, and sometimes stuffed with yummy fillings. For this filling, I made an easy spicy tuna mixture, but feel free to get creative and use whatever filling you like!"

Recipe Card

ingredients

  • 1 (5 ounce) can tuna, drained
  • 1 tablespoon sriracha
  • 1 tablespoon kewpie mayo
  • 1 tablespoon scallions, finely chopped
  • 1/2 teaspoon sea salt
  • 1 cup cooked sushi rice
  • 1/2 tablespoon furikake seasoning, plus extra for garnish
  • 1 large piece sushi nori, cut into 1-inch strips

Method

  • Step 1

In a bowl, combine tuna, sriracha, kewpie mayonnaise, scallions, and salt. Mix well and set aside.

  • Step 2

    Season the rice with furikake.

  • Step 3

To assemble the onigiri, place a small bowl of water nearby. Wet your hands with the water and sprinkle a bit of salt onto your hands. Grab a golf ball sized wad of rice and spread it out into an oblong shape on one hand. Place about a tablespoon of the tuna mixture onto the rice and close the rice around the tuna. Roll the rice into a ball and then shape into a triangle. Sprinkle some extra furikake on the onigiri, and then wrap each triangle with a strip of the sushi nori. Enjoy!
