French-Style Hot Chocolate

Recipe Intro From alexawhatsfordinner

If you’ve ever tried thick & luscious French-style hot chocolate, you know how life changing it can be! I was lucky enough to study abroad in Paris back in my college days, and went to the iconic Angelina tea room as often as I could to drink their LEGENDARY hot chocolate. It was so rich and decadent; I still think about it regularly even though I haven’t had it in about 8 years! Making luscious French-style hot chocolate has become rather popular on social media, so this recipe is an attempt at recreating that fabulous hot cocoa experience at home! This is definitely for the hardcore chocolate lovers.

  • 3 cups heavy whipping cream, divided
  • 1 tablespoon confectioners sugar
  • 1 tablespoon espresso powder
  • 2 cups high quality bittersweet chocolate, chopped
  • 4 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract

Method

  • Step 1

In a large saucepan over medium heat, mix together the whole milk plus 1 cup of heavy cream. Add in the confectioners sugar and espresso powder and mix in. Carefully heat up until small bubbles appear, but don’t allow the mixture to boil. This should take 5-7 minutes.

  • Step 2

Turn off the heat, and stir in the chopped chocolate until melted. Set aside.

  • Step 3

Make the whipped cream: in a chilled bowl, whisk together 2 cups of heavy whipping cream plus granulated sugar and vanilla extract until stiff peaks form.
