ingredients
For the Mac and Cheese:
- 2 boxes Annie’s Homegrown Shells & Real Aged Cheddar
- 6 tablespoons milk
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter
- 1 pound ground sweet Italian sausage
- 1/2 cup onion, chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- salt, to taste
- black pepper, to taste
- 1 10-ounce can diced tomatoes with green chilies
- 1 1/2 cup cheddar cheese, freshly grated
- 4 ounces cream cheese, room temperature

For Topping:
- 1/4 cup Annie’s Homegrown Organic Cheddar Bunnies, crushed
- 1 tablespoon unsalted butter, melted
- 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
Method
Step 1
Cook both boxes of mac and cheese according to directions, cooking pasta al dente (about 8 minutes) and adding milk and butter.
Step 2
Meanwhile, in a skillet, cook sausage and onion until sausage is cooked through and onion is translucent. Add garlic and cook until fragrant, about 1 minute. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
Step 3
Over low heat, combine cooked mac & cheese, sausage, tomatoes, 1 cup of cheddar and cream cheese until cheese has melted.
Step 4
Prepare topping by combining crushed crackers with butter and garlic powder.
Step 5
Transfer mac & cheese to an oven-safe dish, top with the remaining cheddar and cracker topping. Broil for a few minutes until bubbly and golden!
