It is a proven fact that a good, low stress getaway can have a significant positive impact on our happiness and quality of life. But what constitutes one of these getaways? For us, it’s all about the food, ease of travel, good weather and amazing hospitality.

The Phoenician Main Gate

Not only did our recent stay at the Phoenician Resort in Scottsdale Arizona check all our boxes, but without doubt, it was one of the best food forward destinations we’ve visited in a very long time.
This past December, we were invited with some of our friends to visit The Phoenician, A Luxury Collection Hotel and spend the weekend discovering the newly transformed resort.

A view of the resort from Camelback Mountain

Situated at the base of Camelback Mountain and with more than 650 rooms, the Phoenician has been a landmark of Scottsdale since it was built in the mid 1980’s. With sweeping views of the Arizona landscape, the hotel has spent a lot of time incorporating the heritage of the surrounding area into its story.

The Phoenician has paid particular attention to keeping the hotel up to date and modern - with their latest transformation they have focused on their restaurants, pool and key amenities - putting them in a class of their own as a destination for food lovers. With this in mind, we designed our itinerary to highlight as many of their food and drink options as possible - a weekend with great food, great cocktails and incredible surroundings got us in our stress-free zone.

The Perfect Weekend Itinerary

Friday:
Plan your arrival to the Phoenician for late afternoon - Check into one of the stunning guest rooms and have a quick relax before heading to drinks and dinner at Mowry + Cotton. A new addition to the resort, Mowry and Cotton has a menu that is regionally inspired and seasonally driven. With a large open hearth/oven as the centerpiece, Mowry + Cotton offers a variety of flatbreads and other wood fired menu items that provide some serious post travel reward. Head to bed on the early side to rest for your morning Hike up Camelback Mountain.

Saturday:
Start your day early with a guided hike up Camelback Mountain - your early rise will be rewarded with stunning views, some rigorous activity and some historical knowledge about the mountain and the surrounding areas. The resort provides expert guides and be sure to sign up in advance of your visit. Starting at about 8AM - the hike will last until about 11 - which will put you back to the hotel just in time for lunch.

Upon return from the hike, take some time to clean up and then head over to Relish Burger Bistro where you'll be greeted by a menu with a variety of burgers, sandwiches and of course, incredible desserts. Overlooking the golf course, sitting outside is our recommendation, if the weather permits.
The Roundup: Grilled Wagyu Burger, Glazed Short Rib, Fried Onion Ring, Fried Hen Egg, Blue Cheese Cole Slaw
Top to bottom: Achiote BBQ Chicken Nachos, The Black Bean Veggie Burger, HIllary Zio enjoying a margarita
Post lunch, head over to The Thirsty Camel to meet with Robert Porter, the award winning bartender who heads up the beverage program at The Thirsty Camel - he’ll show you tips, tricks and techniques for making a few signature cocktails at home - during the 60 minute class, Robert showed us how to make The Cortez, a cocktail of mezcal, hibiscus spice syrup, orange bitters, and garnished with a pink orchid. We then moved on to the Sonoran Samurai (named after the desert surrounding the hotel & one of Robert’s original recipes) made with gin, puréed red bell pepper juice, chile syrup, lemon, and apple.

The cocktail class will leave you feeling recharged and energized (or perhaps a bit buzzed!) but if you are feeling adventures, hop in an Uber and head down to Old Scottsdale to walk around, shop, have a coffee & check out the artwork at the canal.

Post shopping, you'll want to go back to the hotel to spend some time hanging at the pool (maybe napping at the pool!) before dinner - there are multiple pools on various levels.

For dinner, head to the 5th floor to enjoy a world class steak house - J & G Steakhouse. With stunning views and a modern interior, you'll be greeted by a menu of expertly cooked steaks, perfect craft cocktails and a wine list to please any palate.

The only appropriate end to an incredible day would be to spend the evening outdoors enjoying star gazing and open fire s'mores. Be sure to inquire with the hotel when you book your stay, as the S'mores and Star Gazing is on a set schedule.

Sunday:
Don't let the super comfortable bed hold you hostage, get up and head out to a 75 minute guided yoga class on the lawn - with an expert yoga instructor, they cater to all levels of skill and with the mountain in the back drop, it is the perfect way to kick off your last day.

Before you check out, head back to Mowry + Cotton for an al fresco brunch where you'll find a menu of Fried Chicken and Waffles, Tacos, Omelettes, and Avocado toast.

Thank you to the Phoenician & The Luxury Collection for hosting for an incredible experience. While this post is sponsored, all opinions are our own - we can't wait to go back!
