These chocolatey cake truffles are hiding a secret ingredient- Nutella! Using boxed cake mix makes these truffles easy as can be, but feel free to swap in your favorite homemade chocolate cake recipe! After a quick dip in some melted semisweet chocolate, sprinkle with finely chopped hazelnuts for added crunch and to emphasize the hazelnut flavor.

  • 1 box chocolate cake mix
  • 1 1/2 cups Nutella
  • 1 cup ground toasted hazelnuts
  • 2 teaspoons kosher salt
  • 2 pounds semisweet chocolate chips

Method

  • Step 1

    Bake chocolate cake based on package directions. Allow to cool, then cut into squares and place in a large bowl.

  • Step 2

    Add Nutella and 2 tablespoons ground hazelnuts. Mix thoroughly to combine and create a dense, fudgy cake.

  • Step 3

    Using a 1-tablespoon cookie scoop, make round balls of cake mixture and place on a parchment-lined baking sheet.

  • Step 4

    Melt the chocolate chips over a double boiler.

  • Step 5

    Using two forks, dip cake balls into melted chocolate and spin to coat. Lift to remove excess chocolate and place on parchment. Sprinkle with more ground hazelnuts.

  • Step 6

    Once all truffles have been coated and decorated, refrigerate for 30 minutes to harden.
