Growing up as a military child meant I only got to see my Gram once a year, but every summer without fail, we would get to her house and hurry through the door to get to her big ceramic cookie jar that sat atop the counter and was always full of chocolate chip cookies. My Gram had 7 children and learned to bake in order to make feeding her family of 9 affordable. She used to buy a 50-pound bag of flour and a 50-pound bag of sugar every payday and made bread, pies, cakes, cookies, well, just about everything for her family. My Gram always baked from scratch, even into her 90s, and this is what sparked my love of all things handmade. My Gram was an early widow and couldn’t afford much in the way of gifts and such, so baking was what she lovingly did for her extended family long after her children had families of their own. While she didn’t have much, she DID always use real, simple ingredients, and I can only hope she is proud of the way I have continued to carry on that legacy of baking from scratch with only the best straightforward ingredients.
