ingredients
For the Homemade Marinara Sauce:
- 1/2 cup extra virgin olive oil
- 2 tablespoons minced garlic
- 1 small onion, diced
- 2 (28 ounce) cans Red Gold Whole Peeled Tomatoes
- 1/4 teaspoon dried oregano
- Fresh basil (optional), to taste
- Kosher salt, to taste
- Freshly ground black pepper, to taste
ingredients
For the Stromboli:
- 1 pizza dough (store-bought or homemade)
- 1/2 cup marinara sauce, plus more for serving
- 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese (or 8 slices fresh mozzarella)
- 8 slices of pepperoni
- 8 slices of salami
- 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese, divided
- 1 tablespoon Italian seasoning
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
Method
To make the homemade marinara sauce:
Step 1
In a large pot, heat olive oil over medium heat. Sauté garlic and onion until translucent, about 3-5 minutes.
Step 2
Season with salt, pepper, and oregano.
Step 3
Dice the Red Gold Whole Peeled Tomatoes, then add them with their juices to the pot. Optionally, add the tomatoes whole and use a masher to break them up.
Step 4
Lower the heat and simmer for 30 minutes to 1 hour, until sauce thickens to desired consistency. Stir in fresh basil if using, then remove from heat.
To make the stromboli:
Step 1
Preheat oven to 400°F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
Step 2
On a floured surface, roll out pizza dough into a 12x14-inch rectangle.
Step 3
Spread a thin layer of marinara sauce over the dough, leaving a 1-inch border.
Step 4
Sprinkle mozzarella evenly over the sauce.
Step 5
Layer pepperoni and salami slices over the cheese, then sprinkle with 2 tablespoons of Parmesan.
Step 6
Carefully roll up the dough from one long side into a tight log, pinching edges to seal. Tuck in the ends.
Step 7
Place the stromboli seam-side down on the baking sheet. Brush the top with olive oil, then sprinkle remaining Parmesan and Italian seasoning.
Step 8
Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until golden brown. Let cool slightly, then slice and serve with extra marinara for dipping.
