ingredients
- 2 sheets premade frozen puff pastry dough
- 4 ounces cream cheese, softened
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon lemon juice
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 cup canned cherry pie filling
- 1 egg, beaten with 1 tablespoon of water for egg wash
Method
Step 1
Allow frozen puff pastry dough to thaw a bit at room temperature, just enough so that it can be unfolded without breaking.
Step 2
Meanwhile, make the cream cheese mixture by blending together the softened cream cheese, sugar, lemon juice and vanilla extract until smooth. Set aside.
Step 3
Preheat your oven to 400 degrees and line a large baking sheet with parchment paper. Gently roll out each sheet of puff pastry on a lightly floured surface, just to smooth out the creases in the dough.
Step 4
Using a large heart shaped cutter or a sharp knife, cut out 8, 5 inch hearts. Use a knife or a smaller heart cutter to score a 1/4 inch border inside each one. Don’t cut all the way through - just enough to make a visible line.
Step 5
Use a fork to gently score little holes in the middle of the smaller heart. This will help it stay flat while the outer border rises.
Step 6
Place your hearts on the prepared baking sheet. Spread about a tablespoon of the cream cheese mixture on the center of each one, and then top with about two tablespoons of the cherry pie filling. (Allowing for some of the cream cheese mixture to remain uncovered.)
Step 7
Brush the outside borders with egg wash (beaten egg and water mixture) and then place in the oven to bake for 18 minutes or until the edges are golden brown.
Step 8
Let cool and enjoy!
