These tender cookies come together with a simple butter cookie base to let the Nutella filling shine. Give them their signature thumbprint before a quick trip to the oven until just set. Fill the baked cookies with a spoonful of Nutella for the perfect balance of sweetness and chocolate-hazelnut flavor.

Recipe Description

Nutella's smooth and spreadable consistency makes it ideal for filling the delicate indentations of these cookies, providing the perfect contrast to the crisp, buttery base. Chosen specifically for its rich, creamy blend of roasted hazelnuts, skim milk, and cocoa, Nutella adds a layer of flavor that transforms these simple cookies into a delicious treat. Originally developed in Italy during the 1940s, Nutella has become a beloved staple worldwide. Its versatility allows it to elevate both breakfast spreads and dessert recipes. In these cookies, Nutella shines as the star ingredient, offering a rich, sweet finish that's hard to resist.

ingredients

  • 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1 1/2 sticks butter, softened
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup Nutella

Method

  • Step 1

Preheat oven to 375°F degrees. Prepare a baking sheet with parchment paper.

  • Step 2

Whisk flour, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.

  • Step 3

Cream butter and sugar in a standing mixer fitted with the paddle attachment until light and fluffy, about 3 minutes.

  • Step 4

Reduce speed to low, add egg and vanilla. Stir until completely incorporated, about 1 minute.

  • Step 5

Scrape down sides of the bowl, then stir in flour mixture on low speed until just incorporated, about 1 minute.

  • Step 6

Divide dough into 1 tablespoon size balls. Place each ball one inch apart on prepared baking sheet. Press each ball with the palm of your hand to flatten slightly, then, using the bottom of a wooden spoon (or your thumb), make a round indentation into the center of each cookie, being careful not to break through the bottom.

  • Step 7

Bake for 10-12 minutes. Cookies should be slightly brown on the bottom and relatively pale on top. Allow to cool completely on a wire rack.

  • Step 8

Spoon 1 tablespoon Nutella into the center of each cookie.
