Pancakes, waffles, or french toast? I’ve recently joined team french toast and here’s why:
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
🍊Biggest bang for lowest effort. If we mega-simplify it, all you need is bread, milk, and eggs. The highest quality ingredients will carry the dish far. Plus, you don’t need fancy equipment like a waffle maker! Heck, not even a spatula!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
🍊Texture contrast. It’s truly the best of both worlds (pancakes & waffles). The inside is a soft, melt-in-your-mouth sponge like a pancake, and the outside is a crisp, toasty crust like a waffle. For a sharper contrast, crusty loafs add a crunchier crust and a pleasant chew. Give me alllll the textures baby.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
🍊Double the flavor. You get TWO opportunities to introduce unique flavors — in the bread dough and in the custard. Sourdoughs, brioches, quick breads, etc. will provide your base flavor. The custard is where you introduce complimentary notes. I’m partial to vanilla + orange zest because they pair so well with fresh orange juice.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Even if you’re not into sweet breakfasts, french toast can easily be turned into a savory dish. Hello monte cristos! So where my french toast buddies at?
