ingredients

  • 2 Bosc pears, thinly sliced (almost paper-thin for the best translucent effect)
  • 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 1/2 cups water
  • Edible dried flowers for decoration (optional)

Method

  • Step 1

Using a sharp knife or mandoline, slice the pears as thinly as possible. Thin slices are key to achieving the desired translucent, "glass-like" effect. Avoid thicker slices, as they may not dry evenly.

  • Step 2

In a medium saucepan, combine the sugar and water, bringing the mixture to a gentle simmer. Add the pear slices and cook for about 30 minutes. The slices should begin to look slightly translucent.

  • Step 3

Line a baking tray with parchment paper. Carefully transfer the pear slices from the syrup to the tray, arranging them in a single layer. If desired, place edible dried flowers on top of the slices for an extra decorative touch. (Tip: Make sure the flowers are completely dried to avoid shriveling during baking.)

  • Step 4

Preheat the oven to 200°F. Bake the pears for 1 hour, then flip them over and bake for another hour. Depending on the thickness of your slices, you may need to bake them longer—up to 3 hours total—for a fully dried and crisp finish.

  • Step 5

Let the candied pear slices cool completely before using. Store them in an airtight container at room temperature for up to a week.
