ingredients
- 1 cup chana dal
- 1 cup grated carrots
- 1/4 cup dessicated coconut
- 3 cloves
- 1 tablespoon powder turmeric
- salt
- 2 inch piece cinnamon
- 2 bay leaves
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 1 chopped tomato
- pinch of asafetida
- 1 tablespoon cumin seeds
- 2 whole red chilies
- 1 tablespoon ghee/clarified butter
Method
Step 1
Cook dal on the stove top for 50 mins till done with salt, turmeric and about 4 cups of water. This process can be quickened considerably by using a pressure cooker and cooking for 7-8 whistles.
Step 2
Heat ghee and temper the following: cumin seeds, asafetida, bay leaves, cloves, cinnamon and red chilies. Cook for a few seconds till you get the aroma.
Step 3
Add coconut and fry for a minute or so till it turns golden.
Step 4
Add cooked dal, grated carrots, sugar and chopped tomatoes. Cook for about 10 mins. Serve hot with rice or roti.
