For the Starter
ingredients
- 2 tablespoons water
- 1/4 cup whole milk, plus more for brushing
- 2 tablespoons all purpose flour
For the Breakfast Buns with Nutella®
ingredients
- 1 tablespoon active dry yeast
- 1/2 cup warm water
- 3 tablespoons whole milk powder
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar, divided
- 3/4 teaspoon salt
- 1 large egg
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter, at room temperature
- 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- Nutella®, to serve
- Strawberries, chopped for garnish
Method
Step 1
In a small pot, whisk together all the starter ingredients and cook over low heat until the mixture forms a paste. Turn off heat and transfer the starter to a small bowl.
Step 2
Meanwhile, mix together the warm water, yeast, and 1 ½ teaspoon sugar in a large bowl. Let it rest until the yeast starts to foam, about 5-8 minutes.
Step 3
Once the yeast is ready, add the whole milk powder, remaining sugar, egg, salt, butter, and starter. Mix together until well-combined, then mix in the flour, 1 cup at a time until a dough forms.
Step 4
Transfer the dough to a working surface and knead until elastic and soft.
Step 5
Lightly grease a medium bowl and place the dough inside. Cover with a clean towel or cling wrap until the dough has risen, about 1 hour.
Step 6
Divide the dough into 10-12 equal pieces, then shape each piece into a ball, then cover the rolls and let it rest on a warm surface for 30-45 minutes.
Step 7
Preheat the oven to 375 F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Place the buns on top of the parchment paper and brush with milk. Bake for 12-15 minutes, or until golden.
Step 8
Let the buns cool, then top each bun with 1 Tablespoon Nutella® and a few pieces of chopped strawberries.
