ingredients

  • 1 cups washed Yellow daal
  • 2 cups Water
  • 1/2 teaspoon Turmeric powder
  • To Taste Salt
  • 1 tablespoons Vegetable oil
  • 1/2 teaspoons Cumin seeds
  • 1/2 teaspoon Mustard seeds
  • 1/4 teaspoon Asafoetida
  • 2 pieces finely chopped Green chillies
  • 3 cloves peeled and finely chopped Garlic
  • Coriander for garnish

Method

  • Step 1

    Wash the yellow daal thoroughly and transfer to a pressure cooker along with 2 cups of water.

  • Step 2

    Add turmeric powder and salt, close the lid and cook on medium flame. Wait for 3 whistles.

  • Step 3

    Turn OFF the stove and wait until the steam gets released fully.

  • Step 4

    Mix the daal properly. You can add half a cup of water depending on the consistency you want and adjust the salt.

  • Step 5

    In a hot pan, add clarified butter or vegetable oil, add cumin seeds, mustard seeds and let them splutter, add garlic, green chillies(optional), cook for a min on low flame then add asafoetida.

  • Step 6

    Now add the daal to this tempering and mix it well. Cook for 2 min on low flame. Turn off the stove and garnish with coriander. You can add little lemon juice to it while serving if you want it to be tangy, it tastes good. Can be served with steaming hot plain rice or rotis. Hope you guys enjoy it. :)
