  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 8 ounces hot Italian sausage
  • 1/2 diced Spanish onion
  • 5 minced garlic cloves
  • 1 cup orzo
  • 1/2 teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • 1/4 teaspoon adjusted to taste kosher salt
  • to taste Freshly ground black pepper (optional)
  • to taste Red pepper flakes
  • 2 1/2 cups low-sodium chicken broth
  • 3 tablespoons Tuttorosso Tomatoes Tomato Paste with Sweet Basil
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh basil
  • 1 tablespoon plus more for serving chili paste (optional)
  • for serving Freshly grated Parmesan cheese

Method

  • Step 1

Heat the olive oil in a large pan over medium-high heat.

  • Step 2

Add the sausage and let it cook undisturbed for about 2 minutes to develop a nice crust.

  • Step 3

Continue cooking, breaking the sausage into pieces, until fully cooked. Remove from the pan and set aside.

  • Step 4

In the same pan, add the diced onions and cook until translucent, about 3 minutes.

  • Step 5

Stir in the minced garlic and Tuttorosso Tomatoes Tomato Paste with Sweet Basil. Cook for 1-2 minutes until the tomato paste caramelizes slightly.

  • Step 6

Add the orzo to the pan and stir to coat it in the tomato mixture.

  • Step 7

Pour in the chicken broth, bring to a simmer, and cook for about 10 minutes, stirring frequently to prevent sticking. The orzo should be al dente.

  • Step 8

Stir in the heavy cream and let cook for another 2-3 minutes until thickened.

  • Step 9

Return the cooked sausage to the pan, stir in the fresh basil, and adjust seasoning with the Italian seasoning, salt, pepper, and red pepper flakes as needed.

  • Step 10

If using chili paste, mix it in at this step for extra heat.

  • Step 11

Garnish with freshly grated Parmesan, additional chili paste, and black pepper. Serve immediately and enjoy!
