Yaki Onigiri is a grilled rice ball that is served at Izakaya restaurants. Serve this recipe with sashimi to transform it from a snack into a meal!

ingredients

Yaki Onigiri

  • 300 grams cooked rice
  • 3 teaspoons sesame oil
  • 2 teaspoons sesame seeds

Dipping Sauce

  • 3 teaspoons soy sauce
  • 3 teaspoons mirin
  • 2 teaspoons sesame seeds

Method

  • Step 1

    Combine cooked rice, sesame oil and sesame seeds.

  • Step 2

    Use wet hands to form the onigiri shape (pack tightly so it doesn’t fall apart).

  • Step 3

    Oil the pan and grill (or pan-fry) the rice balls. Meanwhile, prepare the sauce.

  • Step 4

    Once the balls turn crispy on both sides, brush the sauce on top (of both sides) and grill until golden.

  • Step 5

    Wrap with nori and serve
