The texture is perfectly custardy, firm, not runny, and delicately flavoured with Autumn spices and maple syrup. It may not be 70's shag carpet pumpkin orange, since the yams gave it a softer, almost fawn-like colour, but I quite like it!

Moroccan Meatballs with Jewelled Couscous. Along with Deborah of @rainydaybites we have been joyously cooking though Small Victories by @turshen It has been a stellar book to work with, and it will hold a prominent spot on my cookbook shelf from now on. As a send off, we've all gotten together to bake our versions of Turkey and Ricotta Meatballs. Like all of her recipes, @turshen gives options. I opted for her Moroccan Meatballs, which have the addition of Feta, mint, raisins and toasted pine nuts. Along with a cinnamon stick in the sauce, I also included ras el hanout and harissa. And it all got served on top of a highly aromatic Couscous. Jim inhaled it!

All the players are together in the hot tub, and the flavours build as they gently bubble away. This recipe can easily be applied to lamb shanks, osso bucco or even beef short ribs. The Cocoa adds a glorious depth of flavour.

Bourbon Brioche Bread Pudding. With a goodly amount of 63% @valrhonausa chocolate chunks melted throughout! The bread and custard are already amazing. But then another layer of bread tossed in melted butter, cinnamon and sugar is added on top, becoming wonderfully crispy as it bakes. Driving to friends for a visit, with this on my lap, and the entire car soon smelled like bourbon!

Herbed Parmesan Dutch Baby
Herbed Parmesan Dutch baby for the first recipe challenge this month from Dinner: Changing the Game, by @clarkbar for my online monthly #rainydaybitescookbookclub. Crisp and golden walls rise high in the pan making a fortress that holds a delectable herb, cheese, and custardy-like center. I used gruyere and Parmigiano-Reggiano for the cheese and fresh chives and thyme for the herbs. This is so tasty with the salty, cheesy, inside accented with bright herbs and zesty lemon juice. Now, I will tell you that I actually made this recipe twice. The first time it did not look anything like the one in the book. So, because I'm a tad stubborn, I made it again and my changes made a big difference in the results. First, I had my milk and eggs at room temp, second, I let the skillet heat in the oven for a full 30 minutes, third, I gave the eggs and milk a good whisking, and finally I split the filling between several pans. I only had a 10 inch skillet and not the 12 inches the recipe called for. So, I measured it out and put 2 cups in the big pan and 1/2 cup each in my mini skillets. Perfection! I actually like how this gave you almost a mom and child serving, just in time for Mother's Day brunch! Please be sure to check the feeds of everyone else who joined in in the challenge today! Turkey & Ricotta Meatballs With Spaghetti
Turkey and ricotta #meatballs with #spaghetti from Small Victories by @turshen. Ricotta, fresh parsley, basil and Parmesan cheese are added to ground turkey resulting in a meatball that is light, moist, and so flavorful from the fresh herbs. I added my own tomato sauce and put it over spaghetti for a complete meal. I'm not kidding when I tell you these meatballs were so delicious that after they cooked in the sauce I had one, then another, and another and then had to pack them up for our dinner tonight! You must make this recipe if you have this book, and if you don't have it, please go buy it. This cookbook very quickly became a favorite of mine for Julia's gifted writing and simple recipes that will have your family and friends asking for seconds. Plus, if you follow Julia, you will learn that she is such a compassionate, warm, and giving person. I am sad that this month is over as I have so many things still bookmarked to make, but, this is a cookbook that will stay close by in the upcoming months and will be one I continue to turn to when I want to make something for my family that I know is going to be great. Clearly the weather didn't support my desire for chilli. It has been unusually warm here in Toronto. But I still made chilli! Texas Style Chilli and Buttermilk and Honey Cornbread from 'Sunday Suppers' by Karen Mordechai @sundaysuppers I opted to leave the beans out this time, and added beef stock to the fired roasted @muirglen Tomatoes and amazing chilli paste made from dried guajillo chilies and ancho chilies in adobo sauce. When leftovers make the best breakfasts. This classic Farmers Breakfast, or Bauernfrühstück, as us Germans affectionately call it, is best made from leftovers, not fresh. Leftover roasted or boiled potatoes (or that German potato salad I shared a little while back) and leftover grilled sausages are sliced up and sautéed with peppers, tomatoes, and onions. Crack some eggs over it all (sunnyside up for me, over hard for Jim), add grated cheese and watch it start oozing over everything, and you're ready to eat. Funny, even though it's called breakfast, we often eat it for dinner. The weather is changing. I could literally feel the wind changing this afternoon. And it's blowing in Comfort Food!!
