ingredients

  • 3 pounds apples
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon Chinese five spice
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 cup cane sugar
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup bourbon (for apple butter)
  • 1 1/2 ounces apple cider (for cocktail)
  • 1 1/2 ounces bourbon (for cocktail)
  • 1 tablespoon apple butter (for cocktail)

Method

  • Step 1

Peel all of your apples, cut them into pieces, and remove the cores.

  • Step 2

Place apple pieces in crockpot, add brown sugar, cane sugar, cinnamon, and spices... add 1/4 cup of bourbon and toss everything together to coat.

  • Step 3

Cover, and set crockpot to high. Cook for about 4 hours, stirring occasionally- until most of the liquid is absorbed.

  • Step 4

Once apples are softened, and liquid is mostly absorbed... use immersion blender (or carefully transfer to blender) to puree apples until desired smoothness.

  • Step 5

Continue to cook on low, uncovered for about an hour... until desired thickness is achieved.

  • Step 6

Transfer apple butter to mason jars, and seal tightly. Will remain good in the fridge for 1-2 weeks.

  • Step 7

To make the apple butter old fashioned...

  • Step 8

Add apple butter, and bourbon to a cocktail shaker. Stir to combine.

  • Step 9

Add bourbon, and ice. Shake well.

  • Step 10

Strain, and serve over ice. Garnish recommended, orange peel with cloves pierced in.

  • Step 11

I think this would be a great cocktail to serve at a party, and then to gift your guests with a jar of apple butter :)

  • Step 12

You can multiply this recipe as much as desired! Keep in mind, the more apples you use, the longer your cook time will be. (double the apples, double the cook time!)
