ingredients

  • 1 cup flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 6 tablepoons cold vegetable shortening
  • 6 tablespoons ice cold water
  • 2 apples, peeled, cored, and sliced thin
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar

Method

  • Step 1

To make the crust, place 1 cup water and a handful of ice cubes in a bowl and set aside.

  • Step 2

Whisk together the flour and salt in a large bowl. Then, incorporate the vegetable shortening with a fork until small crumbs form.

  • Step 3

Add 5 tablespoons of your ice water to the mixture, and add use your hands to combine it all into a ball of dough. Slightly flatten the dough ball into a thick disk, wrap it in plastic wrap, and place it in the fridge to chill for 30 min.

  • Step 4

Meanwhile, make the filling. In another bowl, combine peeled and thinly sliced apples, lemon juice, water, cinnamon, and brown sugar.

  • Step 5

Once your dough is chilled, preheat your oven to 425 degrees. Use a floured rolling pin to roll out your dough directly on a lightly floured baking sheet or pizza pan. It needs to be about 1/4 in thick.

  • Step 6

Arrange your apples in the center of your dough, leaving about 1 in uncovered around the diameter. Fold this extra dough over the top of the apple filling. Loosely tent a piece of tinfoil over the galette, and bake for 25-30 minutes.

  • Step 7

Remove from oven, let cool, and enjoy!
