ingredients

  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, melted
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/3 cup light brown sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon fine sea salt
  • 1/2 cup dark chocolate chips
  • 1/4 cup milk chocolate chips
  • Flaky sea salt, for topping

Method

  • Step 1

In a large bowl, whisk together melted butter and both sugars until the mixture looks like wet sand. [Note: For extra flavor, brown the butter before mixing.]

  • Step 2

Add the egg and vanilla, whisking until smooth.

  • Step 3

Sift in flour, baking soda, and salt. Fold until mostly combined, then gently fold in the chocolate chips.

  • Step 4

Scoop the dough into 9–11 portions and chill for at least 1 hour or overnight.

  • Step 5

Preheat the oven to 350°F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

  • Step 6

Roll dough balls and place them 2 inches apart on the prepared tray.

  • Step 7

Sprinkle a little flaky sea salt on top before baking for a sweet-salty finish.

  • Step 8

Bake for 9–12 minutes, until the edges are just set and the centers look slightly underbaked.

  • Step 9

Cool on the tray for 5–10 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.
