Low Salt
Salt Awareness Week is May 15-21. Resolve to Save Lives is highlighting the risks of eating too much salt and sharing ways people can cut back. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends no more than 5 grams of salt a day. That’s just one teaspoon! Most people eat more than TWICE that, putting them at increased risk of high blood pressure, heart attack and stroke.
Here are some cooking tips and recipes to get you started!
1) Season your food with lots of herbs and spices such as cumin, garlic, ginger, paprika, rather than salt.
2) Check the nutrition info on the back of packaged food and cooking ingredients such as canned beans, broths, and condiments and choose low-sodium options if you can find them.
3) Look for low-sodium salt at your local supermarket. It tastes just like regular salt, but it's better for you.
