ingredients

  • 1 cup warm milk, warmed to 95F degrees
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 4 ounces active dry yeast
  • 1 egg, at room temperature
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, chilled and cut into cubes
  • 1 cup Nutella®

Method

  • Step 1

Mix warmed milk, sugar, and yeast in a bowl. Stir until yeast is dissolved and mixture looks frothy. Set aside.

  • Step 2

In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the dough hook attachment, add flour and salt.

  • Step 3

Add yeast mixture, egg, and vanilla. Mix on low speed for 5 minutes.

  • Step 4

Turn the mixer speed to medium speed. Add chilled butter, mix for 10 minutes. Dough should look smooth and separate from the sides of the bowl.

  • Step 5

Cover with a damp kitchen towel or plastic wrap and leave to rise for 1 ½ hours at room temperature.

  • Step 6

Once dough rises, roll out on a lightly floured surface into a 9x6 inch rectangle about ¼ inch thick. Spread evenly with Nutella. Tightly roll into a log, cut lengthwise in half, and twist into a braided bread.

  • Step 7

Move the braided bread into a 9 inch parchment lined loaf pan. Cover with a damp kitchen towel or plastic wrap for 1 hour at room temperature (or can be kept overnight in the fridge).

  • Step 8

Preheat oven to 395°F. Brush the bread with melted butter and bake for 30 minutes in the oven until golden brown.
