Melomakarona - Greek Honey -Walnuts Cookies

ingredients

  • 250 milliliter mandarin orange juice
  • 100 g chopped walnuts
  • 2 tbsp mandarin orange zest
  • 1 star anis powder (optional)
  • 1 mandarin orange (cut in half)

Method

  • Step 1

    Start by preparing the syrup. Bring it to a boil (at least 3 hours ahead, since the syrup should be cold by the time you deep in the melomakarona). When it boils remove from heat and add the honey.

  • Step 2

    1st mixture: 250 ml mandarin orange juice 150 ml vegetable oil 140 ml olive oil 20 g icing sugar 1/3 tsp clove 1 1/2 tsp cinnamon 1/4 star anis powder 1/4 nutmeg powder 1/2 tsp baking soda 1 tbsp. mandarin orange zest 100 gm chopped walnuts Mix all the above ingredients thoroughly.

  • Step 3

    2nd mixture: 500 gm flour 100 gm semolina Add the ingredients of 2nd mixture the 1st one and mix carefully. Do not overmix, since it might curdle.

  • Step 4

    Once the dough is ready, divide it in 40 small balls and shape them in oval with your hands or any baking mold.

  • Step 5

    Bake it at 374°F (190°C) for about 25 minutes, or until they are crisp. Soak the hot Melomakarona into hot syrup for 20 seconds and than strain them. Drizzle them with some honey and sprinkle with walnuts. Enjoy!!
