- 1 pound (4 sticks) softened unsalted butter
- 8 cups (2 pounds) confectioners' sugar
- Kosher salt, to taste
- Vanilla extract, to taste
Method
Step 1
In a large mixing bowl, whip the softened unsalted butter on medium-high speed for 8 to 10 minutes, or until the butter becomes light, pale, and fluffy. Be sure to scrape down the sides of the bowl occasionally to ensure everything is fully incorporated.
Step 2
Gradually add the confectioners' sugar, salt, and vanilla extract to the whipped butter. Whip on high speed for 1 minute until the sugar is fully incorporated and the buttercream becomes smooth and creamy. If needed, adjust the consistency by adding a tablespoon of milk or cream at a time until you reach the desired texture.
Step 3
Once the buttercream is light and fluffy, it’s ready to use for frosting cakes, cupcakes, or cookies. You can add more vanilla extract, other flavorings, or food coloring at this stage for customization.
