ingredients
- 3 cups flour
- 1 cup butter, 2 sticks, softened
- 1 cup sour cream
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 2 egg yolks
- 2 egg whites
- 3 cups walnuts, chopped
- 2 cups sugar
- 1 egg yolk, beaten
- 1/2 cup whole walnuts
Method
Step 1
In a bowl, combine 3 cups of flour with 1 cup of softened, unsalted butter. Incorporate well together until butter forms into small crumbs.
Step 2
To the butter and flour add 1 cup of sour cream and 1 teaspoon of sugar. Mix together.
Step 3
Add in 2 egg yolks. Mix and toss the dough together until all is well incorporated. The dough will become soft and gentle.
Step 4
Divide the dough into 3 equal parts. Shape each part into a round disk-like shape. Wrap each with plastic wrap and refrigerate for 30 minutes.
Step 5
Meanwhile, prepare the filling by beating together 2 egg whites and 2 cup of sugar.
Step 6
Chop 3 cups of walnuts. Stir the walnuts into the eggs and sugar.
Step 7
Preheat oven to 350F.
Step 8
Butter up an oven-safe baking pan, 8 X 12 inch ( If it is glass or ceramic, you don’t need to butter it up).
Step 9
Take the dough out of refrigerator and roll it out gently for it to fit into your baking dish. (Use flour for the dough for it not to stick to your surface). Carefully transfer one rolled out dough into your pan.
Step 10
Take half of the walnut mixture and spread it over the dough in the pan.
Step 11
Add another rolled-out dough and spread the rest of the nut mixer over the dough. Cover it with the third rolled-out dough.
Step 12
Cut into diamond shapes.
Step 13
Whisk 1 egg yolk and using a pastry brush, brush over the top of the baklava. Add a nut to each piece.
Step 14
Put in the oven for 45 minutes or until the top is golden in color.
Step 15
After taking it out of the oven, let the baklava cool down completely before trying to take the end result out from the pan. Enjoy this easy recipe!
