FAQs
Can I make these puff pastry spoons ahead of time?
Yes! You can bake the puff pastry spoons up to 2 days in advance and store them in an airtight container. Add the toppings just before serving to keep them fresh and crisp.
What if I don’t have everything bagel seasoning?
No problem! You can substitute with a sprinkle of sesame seeds, poppy seeds, or even a pinch of sea salt and cracked black pepper for a similar effect.
Can I use other toppings?
Absolutely! Get creative with your toppings. Swap smoked salmon for prosciutto, add a dollop of herbed cream cheese, or even try a sweet version with whipped cream and fresh berries.
What if I don’t have a spoon to cut around?
If you don’t have a spoon as a template, you can freehand the shape or use a similar-sized stencil. The goal is to make a sturdy, flat base for the toppings.
Ingredient Notes
Puff Pastry: Be sure to fully thaw the puff pastry before use for easy handling. Keep it chilled until you’re ready to cut the shapes to prevent it from getting too soft.
Everything Bagel Seasoning: This seasoning adds a delicious crunch and salty-savory flavor to the spoons. You can find it at most grocery stores, but feel free to make your own with a mix of sesame seeds, poppy seeds, dried onion, dried garlic, and salt.
Crème Fraîche: For a tangy and creamy topping, crème fraîche is a classic choice. If unavailable, substitute with sour cream or Greek yogurt.
Smoked Salmon: Choose high-quality smoked salmon for the best flavor. Thin slices work best for this recipe to avoid overwhelming the delicate puff pastry.
Salmon Roe or Caviar: These add a luxurious touch and a burst of briny flavor. If you’d like a more budget-friendly option, you can omit this or use a less expensive roe variety.
Fresh Dill: The dill adds a burst of freshness and a fragrant herbal note. If dill isn’t your preference, chives or parsley can be used instead.
Fresh Lemon Juice: A small squeeze of lemon ties all the flavors together, adding brightness to balance the richness of the other ingredients. Use freshly squeezed juice for the best flavor!
