ingredients

Dough

  • 2 cups milk, warmed
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 2 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour

ingredients

Filling

  • 3/4 cup brown sugar
  • 3/4 cup butter, room temperature
  • 2 1/2 tablespoons cinnamon

ingredients

Icing

  • 2 tablespoons powdered sugar
  • 2 tablespoons water
  • 1 tablepsoon vanilla extract

Method

  • Step 1

In a large bowl, mix together 2 cups of warm milk, ½ cup of granulated sugar, ½ cup unsalted melted butter, and 2 teaspoons active dry yeast. Let sit for 15 minutes until bubbles to form.

  • Step 2

Add 4 cups of all-purpose flour to the mixture. Using either a spoon or your hands, mix together to form a dough. Cover and let rise 1 hour.

  • Step 3

Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead until elastic and smooth. Roll out the dough using a rolling pin and shape into a 1/4 inch thick rectangle.

  • Step 4

Preheat oven to 350ºF and grease a baking tray with butter.

  • Step 5

Make the filling: in a separate bowl, mix together ¾ cup of brown sugar, 3/4 cup room temperature butter and 2 ½ tablespoons cinnamon.

  • Step 6

Spread the filling over the dough using a flat spatula. Beginning at one end of the rectangle, roll the dough into a log as tightly as possible.

  • Step 7

Use dental floss, butcher's twine, or a sharp knife to cut the dough into 6 rolls. Let proof for 10 minutes.

  • Step 8

Place the rolls on the prepared tray 1-2 inches apart. Cover with aluminum foil and bake for 15 minutes. Remove the foil and continue baking another 5-10 minutes until the tops are golden brown.

  • Step 9

Allow the cinnamon rolls to cool for 10 minutes.

  • Step 10

Meanwhile, make the icing. In a small bowl, whisk together powdered sugar, water and vanilla extract. Pour the icing over the cinnamon rolls and serve.
